Solomon Levi Bowen
Solomon Levi Bowen was born on 10 December 1817 in Georgia, by one account in Wilkes County. He was the eldest son of Dixon Bowen and Sarah Lee, who had eighteen children between them and Dixon's second wife. As a young man of eighteen he served as a private in a company of Georgia volunteers in the Creek War of 1836.
On 21 July 1844, in Henry County, he married Mary Cook before Allen Cleveland, minister of the gospel. His mother had died nine weeks before. He farmed in the Knob district of Henry County, in the rolling country south east of Atlanta, where his father had held land since the 1820s. Mary was about ten years younger than him.
The 1870 census finds the house full: Sarah, twenty; Lucinda, nineteen; Dickson, eighteen; Ellen, eleven; and Eliza, three. Find a Grave links add Samuel Jefferson, a second Sarah, and Elza Thomas, called Tom.
The 1880 census index places a Solomon Bowen of the right age, with a wife Mary and a son Dickson, in district 124 of Richmond County, at the other end of the state. Whether the family really moved east, or the index has the county wrong, is not settled. His daughter Lucinda stayed in Henry County with the man she had married.
He died on 10 March 1898, aged eighty, and is buried in the Bowen family ground at Stockbridge, near his father and mother. Mary died the next year and lies there too. Two photographs of him in old age survive, showing a white-bearded man.
