Stanford Lee Newsom, known as Lee, was born on 6 May 1899 in Tennessee. His memorial places his birth at Jacksboro, in Campbell County, and the census of 1950 agrees that he was born in Tennessee. His parents were William Riley Newsom and Nancy O. Richardson. In June 1900 he was Lee S., a son of 1, born in May 1899, in their household in the second civil district of Chester County, Tennessee, the youngest of seven living children. His brothers were Ambres, Elbert and Joel, and his sisters Alice, Della and Cora. In April 1910 he was 10, living with his widowed father and four of the others on the family farm in Jones County, Texas. Nancy died in Jones County, Texas, in January 1906, and Riley lived on near Hamlin until 1938. Lee was not yet seven when his mother died.

On 9 January 1919 he married Maudie Lee Wood, a Texas girl a year younger than he was. The date is cast on their shared bronze marker. They started out in Fisher County, where Lee's father lived, and their son Lester Lee was entered in the Fisher County register of births about 1921 with S. L. Newsom as his father. Later they made their home in the Midland area of West Texas, where their three children were raised: Lester, Mary Alice and William Riley, the youngest, born in January 1931. The younger son carried his grandfather's full name, William Riley, and inside the family he was called Riley.

In May 1950 Lee was 51 and living in the town of Midland with Maudie and their son Bill, who was nineteen and working as a roofer. The census taker marked Lee as unable to work. In August 1960 the Midland firm of Davidson, Rutter and Wilbanks announced that it would drill the No. 1-G S. L. Newsom, a 4,150-foot well in the Germania (Grayburg) pool of northeast Midland County. In October 1961 the same operators completed the No. 2-G S. L. Newsom in the northwest part of the Germania field.

Lee died at Midland on 28 February 1977, at 77. He was buried in Resthaven Memorial Park at Midland, where Maudie was laid beside him in 1982.
