William Riley Newsom
William Riley Newsom, always called Bill, was born on 27 January 1931 in the Midland area of Texas. He was the youngest of the three children of Lee and Maudie Newsom. His brother was Lester Newsom and his sister was Mary Alice, who married a Stroud.
He served four years in the United States Air Force. While he was in the service, on 23 February 1952, he married Phyllis Ann Haass, a Medina County girl who had graduated from Lytle High School two years before. He came home from the Korean War and went to work in the oilfields, where he stayed 22 years.
After the oilfields he moved the family to San Angelo. There he went to work for A-B Sales and retired after 21 years. He and Phyllis had two daughters, Denise and Dana. When the girls were grown, the couple raised three of their grandchildren as well.
His obituary lists his pleasures plainly: hunting, fishing, camping, photography, pool and dominoes. He also played the mandolin, and he enjoyed what the family called his "picking and grinning" sessions with his friends.
Phyllis died in March 2003, after 51 years of marriage. Bill died peacefully on Sunday, 7 October 2007, at 76. His funeral was held at Johnson's Funeral Home chapel in San Angelo on 11 October, and he was buried that afternoon beside Phyllis in the St. Louis Catholic Cemetery at Castroville, in her home county. He was survived by his daughters, Denise Tharp of Gatesville and Dana Keele of Austin, four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
