Stephen Hallock
Stephen Hallock was a son of Benjamin Hallock of Setauket, on the north shore of Long Island. The Hallock family history says that "Benjamin, son of John 1st, had sons Benjamin and Stephen." The elder brother, Benjamin, was born at Setauket in 1729, married Phebe Prindle in 1755, and settled near Gaylordsville in New Milford, Connecticut. The family Bible gives his birth as 31 October 1736, the same day and month as his death sixty six years later.
He married Elizabeth Chamberlin at Richmond, in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, about 1761. She was born on 27 June 1742. The family record in the Hallock Bible lists their twelve children: Stephen, about 1762 or 1763; Elizabeth, called Betsey, 18 January 1764, who married a Stevens; Content C., 6 January 1766; Sally, 17 April 1768, who married a Crane; Joseph, 5 August 1770; John, 20 October 1772; Benjamin, 17 December 1774; Polly, 25 March 1777; Lucy, 7 July 1779; Clarinda, 12 August 1781, who also married a Crane; Isaac, 12 May 1784; and Amos, 5 April 1787.
During the Revolution a Stephen Hallock served in the Berkshire County militia. He enlisted on 30 June 1777 in Captain Aaron Rowley's company, in Colonel John Brown's detachment, and served twenty two days "at Fort Ann on an alarm at Ticonderoga". On 22 July he enlisted again under Rowley, in Colonel John Ashley's detachment, and served twenty three days at Stillwater. In October and November he served a month and eight days at Claverack, in Colonel Israel Chapin's regiment. In November 1780 he marched once more, for four days, in a company sent "to reinforce army under Gen. Stark at Stillwater." The record does not say whether this was Stephen or his son Stephen Jr. The Daughters of the American Revolution list the father as a patriot.
By 1790 the family was in Vermont. That year's census finds him at Williston, in Chittenden County, beside "Stephen Hallock Junr". In 1792 he bought a place at Richmond, Vermont, "on the Onion river, between Mounts Mansfield and Camel's Hump." The Onion River is now called the Winooski. In 1906 the house was the residence of a relative, Rufus Stevens, Esq. All six of his sons settled and raised families at Richmond.
His wife had probably died on 18 March 1802. He died there on 31 October 1802, aged sixty six. The Richmond town clerk's copy of the death reads "Stephen Hallock, 66 yrs, Oct 31 1802, Hill", meaning the Hill Cemetery. His white marble stone now lies broken on the ground there. It began "Sacred to the memory of" him and ended with a verse.
His sons spread out from Richmond. Stephen Jr. died at Sandusky Plains, Ohio. Content died in Lewis County, New York. Joseph died at Madrid, New York, in 1834. John died in western New York. Isaac died at Middlesex, Vermont. Amos went to Grand Blanc, Michigan.
