Stephen P. Dean
Stephen P. Dean was born on 24 December 1840. Family accounts give his full name as Stephen Pilly Dean and make him a son of Thomas Mastin Dean, born in Jasper County, Georgia, in 1810, and Eliza Piggott, a daughter of the Conecuh County mill builder Thomas Piggott. His brothers included Charles Edward Dean, a private who died in 1864, Nathan Thomas Dean and John Sirmon Dean, and his sisters Nancy, later Welch, and Frances Amanda.
A caption with the photograph of his stone, given by a descendant, says he served in Company B of the 3rd Alabama Cavalry. That regiment fought through the war with the Army of Tennessee under General Joseph Wheeler.
Stephen married Frances Watts, called Fannie, who was born in May 1846. Their children, as a family list gives them, were Josephine, born and died in 1868; Elizabeth, called Lizzie, 1870 to 1949; Serena, 1871 to 1875; Mary, born on 26 March 1875; and Martha, called Minnie, born in 1876.
Stephen P. Dean died on 16 August 1875, aged 34, five months after his daughter Mary was born. Their little daughter Serena died the same year, and Minnie was born after him. Mary was given his name for her middle name, Mary Stephen Dean. He was buried in the Piggotte Cemetery, under a stone reading "S. P. Dean / Born Dec. 24, 1840 / Died Aug. 16" and the year.
