Susan Boyd
Susan, called Susey on her son Eli's 1922 death certificate, was the wife of Jack Boyd of Wayne County, Tennessee, and bore him at least four sons between about 1842 and 1850. Jack was dead by the summer of 1858. On 16 August 1858 she married Daniel Wyatt in Wayne County, and the county book carries the license at page 8. What became of Daniel is not recorded: when the census taker came through District 2 in July 1860, he wrote her down as Susan Wyatt, 37, heading a household of four boys named Boyd, Westley 18, William 17, Eli 15 and Joseph 10, and no husband of either surname on the page.
She raised at least two soldiers. Eli and Wesley both went into the Union's 2nd Tennessee Mounted Infantry when it was raised in 1863, in separate companies of the same regiment. By 1870 she had taken back the Boyd name: the census of District 5 shows Susanah Boyd, 49, farming on her own account with a personal estate of 350 dollars and her youngest son Joseph T., nineteen, working the place, while her son William J.'s young family lived next door. In 1880 she was in Joseph's household in Civil District 1, aged 62, and the enumerator wrote Mother against her name, the only census of her life to state the relationship. Her son Eli's family farmed the next dwelling on the page.
That June 1880 line is the last record of her found. Her death and burial are unknown, and Wayne County kept no death register in her lifetime. Eli's memorial styles her Susanna C. Boyd, which may preserve her full name or may be a compiler's embroidery; the certificate's plain Susey and the census taker's Mother are what the record actually says.
