Eli Boyd
Eli Thomas Boyd was born in Wayne County, Tennessee on 3 August 1844. His death certificate gives the day and counts his age to it: 77 years, 11 months and 27 days. His father was Jack Boyd and his mother Susey, as the certificate names them. Jack was dead by the summer of 1858, when the widow Susan Boyd married Daniel Wyatt in Wayne County, and the 1860 census shows the boy at fifteen in a District 2 household headed by Susan Wyatt, 37, with three more Boyd sons around her and no husband on the page.
In 1863 Wayne County, upland, poor and short of slaves, was one of the strongest Union corners of the state, and it raised men for the Federal army. Eli went into Company H of the 2nd Tennessee Mounted Infantry, a Union regiment of some 1,300 men, and served as a private; his brother Wesley served in Company K of the same regiment. In 1891 he applied for an invalid pension on the service, and from 1907 the government paid it: twelve dollars a month at first, rising act by act to fifty by 1920.
On 29 March 1874 he married Adaline Sanderson in Wayne County, a daughter of the renter farmer Alford Sanderson; Eli's brother Joseph had married her sister Nancy C. Sanderson twenty-seven months before. The 1880 census shows Eli's household in Civil District 1, with Adaline, three children and a hired boy, and his brother Joseph's family next door with their mother Susannah, 62, living in it. The 1900 census shows Eli and Adline farming at dwelling 48 in Civil District 1 with five children at home: James, Charley, Frona, Ada and Zora. In 1910 they were in Civil District 3, the two youngest still with them. He died of influenza at his home on Rural Route 3 out of Clifton on 30 July 1922, after four weeks under the doctor, and the accrued balance of his pension was ordered payable to his widow the following February.
