Susan Colvin

b. 1790 · South Carolina
Born 1790, South Carolina
Children include Julia

Susan Colvin was born in South Carolina about 1790. She belonged to the Colvins who settled in Greene County, Alabama. A history of the Coleman family of the same county, which also writes about its Colvin and Shannon neighbors, says plainly that "Susan Colvin married Elias Cockrell." The same page names a Martha Feaster Colvin, whose sons were Thomas, Bynum and Ed, and says "There was a big family." It does not say outright whose daughter Susan was.

Susan and Elias married in South Carolina, where the eldest child still at home in 1850, Jina, was born about 1822. They came west to Alabama in the 1820s, when the Black Belt counties along the Tombigbee were filling with Carolina families, and their younger children were born in Greene County from about 1829.

In the census of 1850 the assistant marshal reached the house on 4 January 1851. Susan was 60, born in South Carolina, the wife in the household of Elias Cockrell, 62, a farmer who could not read or write. With them were Jina, 28, and four born in Alabama: Thomas, 21, and William, 18, both laborers, Binum, 16, and Julia A., 14. Next door lived Sandford Cockrell, 26, with Martha, 18.

Binum carried an uncommon name that ran in the Colvin family. A Binam Colvin of Greene County bought federal land there in 1834. In November 1846 Binam Colvin and Esom Lyles stood surety when William Colvin took out letters of administration on the estate of Edward Colvin.

In November 1854 Julia married Thomas Alexander Lyles, a widower who farmed about thirty houses up the road, and in 1857 she went with him to Jackson Parish, Louisiana. The family's own account, printed in a Shreveport newspaper genealogy column in the 1960s or later, gave Julia's mother as Martha Colvin. The surname matches the Coleman history. The given name does not: the wife in the house in 1850 was Susan, and the Coleman history gives Elias Cockrell's wife as Susan. Susan was about 46 when Julia was born, late but possible, and no record of the time names Julia's mother outright.
