Julia Ann Elizabeth Cockrell was born in Alabama in 1836. Her father was Elias Cockrell, a South Carolina-born farmer of Greene County. His wife in 1850 was Susan Colvin, and a descendant's account gives Julia's mother as Martha Colvin. In the census of 1850, taken at the house on 4 January 1851, she was 14 and living with Elias, 62, and Susan, 60, with Jina, 28, and Thomas, William and Binum, the three youngest boys. Elias could not read or write.
On 18 November 1854 James R. Evans, judge of probate of Greene County, issued a license for "Mr Thomas A Lisles" to marry "Miss Julia A E Cockrell," and a justice of the peace, A. S. Allen, married them that month. Thomas Alexander Lyles was a South Carolinian eleven years older and a widower. Four years earlier he had been farming about thirty houses up the road with his first wife, Jane, and their children John P. and Rebecca Jennie.
Her first child, Frances Patterson Lyles, was born on 12 November 1857. That year the family moved to Jackson Parish, Louisiana, where eight more children were born: Nora Belle, Alice Vernon, Mabel Estelle, Alsey Pollard, William Gordon, Eula Florence, Orville Braxton and Wesley Broadwell. Wesley, the youngest named, was born on 11 April 1879, when Julia Ann was about 43. He married Julia Hinton of the Wesley Chapel community.
In June 1880 the family was farming in Ward One of Lincoln Parish. The census gives Julia Ann as J. A. Lyles, 42, keeping house, born in Alabama, with nine children at home: Frances, Nora, Alice, Estelle, Alsey, William, Braxton, Eula and Wesley, then 2. Thomas died in Jackson Parish on 6 July 1904. Julia Ann lived on as a widow for almost nineteen years and died on 20 February 1923. Her children married into the Gardner, Sisemore, Sullivan, Brown, Hinton and Grigsby families of north Louisiana.
