Susan Elvina Stroope
Susan Elvina Stroope, called Susie, was born on Christmas Day 1886 in Lee County, Texas. Her memorial gives her parents as John Price Stroope, from Arkansas, and Henrietta Elizabeth Holland, from Texas. Her mother had been married before, and Susie grew up with half-siblings named Hampton as well as her brothers Dock Luther and Ollie Stroope. Her son's obituary spells the name Stroop.
A studio portrait of her survives from her young womanhood. She wears her dark hair piled high with a large white flower pinned at the side, a high lace collar and a dark jacket.
About 1906, in Oklahoma, she married Walter Everett Langley, a Missouri boy whose family had come into Oklahoma Territory in the 1890s. Their first son, Luther Everett, was born in 1907, and Ernest Franklin followed at Bilby, Hughes County, in April 1910. The family farmed in Pontotoc County in 1920, where their baby daughter Mamie died, then in Rose Township, Payne County, by 1930. Juil, Vernon, Ira and Lewis completed the family. In 1940 Susie and Walter were in Benton County, Arkansas, and Walter died there in 1943.
Susie lived another forty two years. She died at Stillwater on 4 August 1985, aged 98, and was buried beside Walter in the Gentry Cemetery in Arkansas. Her son Ernest had settled at Stillwater, and her son Vernon lived there too.
