Ernest Franklin Langley
Ernest Franklin Langley was born on 19 April 1910 at Bilby, a small place in Hughes County, Oklahoma. He was the second son of Walter Everett Langley and Susie Elvina Stroope. His father had come down from Missouri as a boy and his mother was a Texan. In 1920 the family was farming in Pontotoc County, with Ernest, his older brother Luther, his younger brother Juil and a baby sister, Mamie, who died that year. Later brothers were Vernon, Ira and Lewis.
By the late 1920s the Langleys had moved north to Payne County. On 21 December 1928 Ernest married Viola Rose Focht at Perry, the seat of Noble County. She was sixteen and had grown up at Glencoe. In 1930 they were in Rose Township, Payne County, near her parents, and their son Walter James was born that year. Three daughters followed: Thelma about 1932, Elvina about 1934, and Velta about 1940.
Ernest went into the oil fields and stayed there all his working life. His obituary called him "a driller in the oil field" who "spent his life in Stillwater, Glencoe and Pawnee areas, living mainly in Stillwater." In 1940 the family was in Liberty Township, Pawnee County. When he registered for the draft at Pawnee that October he gave his birth date as 19 April 1910. In 1950 the census found him at Stillwater, a roughneck for an oil well drilling company who had worked 50 weeks of the past year.
He was a Baptist. He died at Stillwater Medical Center on Saturday 26 October 1996, aged 86, and was buried in Sunset Memorial Gardens at Stillwater. He left Viola after almost sixty eight years of marriage, his son James and James's wife Clara of Ponca City, his daughters Thelma Madison of Ingalls, Elvina Cox of Jones and Velta Benson of Broken Arrow, his brother Vernon of Stillwater, 16 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. His grandsons carried him to the grave.
