Susan Laretta Sanders, called Susie, was born on 6 April 1883 in Mississippi. About 1901 she married Albert Norris Rowell, and over the next twenty four years she bore him ten children, beginning with Farley in 1902 and ending with Rowena in December 1925.

In 1920 the family lived at Smyrna, in Copiah County, where the census gave her age as 36. By 1925 they had moved to Gloster in Amite County. Her youngest, Rowena, was born there on 19 December 1925, and her husband died three days later. Susie was 42, with a newborn and most of her children still at home.

She lived another twenty seven years. She died at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on 24 July 1952, aged 69, and was brought home to be buried beside Albert at Union Cemetery, Gloster, under their shared stone: "Mother, Susie Sanders, Apr 6 1883, July 24 1952." When her daughter Annie Lois applied for a Social Security number, she gave her mother's name as Susie L. Sanders.
