Susanna Hayden
Susanna Hayden was the wife of John Hayden, who was at Dorchester in the Massachusetts Bay Colony by 1633 and moved to Braintree about 1640. Her maiden name is not known. Pullen, Proctor and Lyon have all been suggested, and no record supports any of them. She was John's wife by about 1634, when their son John was born.
Her children were John, born about 1634; Joseph; Samuel, born before 1640; Jonathan, born at Braintree on 19 May 1640; Hannah, on 7 April 1642; Ebenezer, on 12 September 1645; and Nehemiah, on 14 February 1647/8. Samuel married Hannah Thayer in 1664 and died in 1676.
Her son Joseph was "bereaved of his senses". From 1647 her husband asked the colony for help in keeping him, and from 1648 the General Court granted him five pounds at a time. In 1654 the court allowed Goodwife Hayden fifty shillings for the care of her child. Goodwife was the ordinary title of a married woman below the gentry. In October 1655 Susanna petitioned the court herself.
When John made his will on 31 October 1678 he called her "my dear wife Susanna who hath been my faithfull companion for many yeares". He left her his whole visible estate for her life, "in order to the maintaining of my son Joseph". She was the first of the three executors he named. On 26 July 1682, John being dead, she brought the will into the county court for probate. She was the only one of the three to take up the trust.
She died before 3 October 1684. On that day the court was told that "Susanna the Executrix of the within written will of her husband John Haiden and the onely person accepting that trust and Administring on the Estate is dec[eased]". Administration passed to her sons John and Jonathan. An account of the estate in 1695 charged the cost of her funeral to it. Her son Joseph was dead by then too.
