Samuel Hayden

Samuel Hayden was a son of John and Susanna Hayden, who came to Dorchester, Massachusetts, by 1634 and moved to Braintree by 1640. His birth is not recorded. The Braintree births begin with his younger brother Jonathan, on 19 May 1640, so Samuel was born before that.

On 28 October 1664 he married Hannah Thayer at Braintree. A Thayer family history of 1874 says they were married "by Major Lusher". In the Massachusetts colony a marriage was a civil act, performed by a magistrate rather than a minister. A Boston copy of the record gives the date as 28 May 1661, but the Braintree record says 1664.

Their first two children died as infants. Samuel was born on 6 August 1665 and died on 27 August. Susanna was born on 27 September 1666 and died the same month. The town clerk then entered "Sarah Hayden daughter of Samll Hayden & Hanna his wiffe borne the 1. mo. 25, 1668", that is 25 March 1668, and "Katheren Hayden daughter of Samll. Hayden & Hanna his wiffe born the 1 mo. 10th. 70-71", 10 March 1670/1.

He rode in the Suffolk Troop of horse. When war with the Indians broke out in 1675, the conflict known as King Philip's War, he was one of five Braintree men impressed for service. The return listing them is dated 3 December 1675.

He died in 1676 without a will. His inventory was taken on 23 October 1676 and came to £156 13s 4d. On 31 October his widow Hannah was made administratrix. His daughter Sarah was eight. Two years later his father's will remembered "the children of his deceased son Samuel".
