Susannah Hungerford

1676-1713 · New London CT
Born 1676, probably New London, Connecticut
Died 1713
Father: Thomas Hungerford
Children include Simeon

Susannah Hungerford was born about 1676, probably at New London, Connecticut. She was the fourth child of Thomas Hungerford and his wife Mary. Her father moved to Lyme in 1685 and settled at East Haddam in 1692, across the Connecticut River from Lyme. There he was a blacksmith and the first selectman of the town.

About 1700 she married Samuel Church of Lyme. A Hungerford genealogy of 1932 lists her among Thomas Hungerford's children: "Susannah, b. about 1676; d. ---; m. about 1700, Samuel Church". Earlier Church family histories had called her "of East Haddam (?)" and "probably" his daughter.

She bore seven children between 1699 and 1714: John, Mary, Edward, Samuel, Simeon, Hannah and Richard.

Her father made his will at East Haddam on 11 January 1713/14. He left the rest of his personal estate to "my 5 daughters, viz., Elizabeth, Susannah, Sarah, Mary and Esther". His inventory was taken on 5 February.

She died on 5 February 1713, by a lineage book of 1923. If that date is old style, meaning February 1713/14, she died on the day her father's inventory was taken, a few weeks after he named her in his will, and her son Richard was born in the weeks before. If it means February 1712/13, she was already dead when the will was written. The records do not settle which.

Her husband died at Lyme in June 1718, leaving the children orphaned. Simeon was ten and Richard four.
