Thomas Hungerford was born at Hartford, Connecticut, about 1648. His father, also Thomas, moved to New London in 1650, when John Winthrop the younger was laying out that town. His mother's name is not known. She died while he was small, and in 1657 his father sent his little sister Sarah to be raised by Anne Leigh at Ipswich, Massachusetts. His father married Hannah Willey in 1659 and died in 1663, when Thomas was fifteen.

Before 6 June 1671 he married a woman named Mary. A family history of 1932 calls her "Mary Green or Gray of the Plantation of the Narragansetts in Rhode Island". That June the New London County Court fined the couple for fornication before marriage. The fine was five pounds or a whipping, and it was paid with a barrel of pork.

They lived at New London until about 1687. He moved to Lyme in 1685, and in December 1687 he sold the land at New London that had been granted to him in 1673. In 1692 he settled at East Haddam, across the Connecticut River from Lyme. There he was a blacksmith, was given the title of Mr., and was the first selectman of the town. His name is burned into the leather cover of the first volume of the East Haddam records.

The same history gives him a second wife, Mary Graves, a daughter of John Graves, born in England. No date is known for that marriage.

He had three sons and five daughters. Elizabeth married Joseph Gates; Thomas married Elizabeth Smith; John married Deborah Spencer; Susannah married Samuel Church of Lyme. Green, Sarah, Mary and Esther follow in his will.

He made his will at East Haddam on 11 January 1713/14 and died that month. The inventory was taken on 5 February and came to £278 0s. 6d. The will was proved on 5 April 1714.
