Thomas Franklin

1760-1808 · South Carolina
Born 1760, Chester County, South Carolina
Died 1808
Children include Ailcy

Thomas Franklin was born in South Carolina about 1760, by his memorial. In the records of his own time he is plain Thomas Franklin. His daughter Ailcy's granite gravestone, set in Texas long after her death, names him Thomas Barton Franklin. His memorial calls him Thomas Baker Franklin.

About 1785 he married Jemima Morris. Over the next twenty-two years they had about eleven children. Their names are given as Henry, 1786; Elizabeth, called Betsy, 1787; Thomas H., 1788; Elnora, 1790; Frances, called Franky, 1792; Mary, called Polly, 1795; Ralph, 1798; Alice, 1800; Allen, 1803; Ailcy, 1806; and James Benjamin, 1807.

A Thomas Franklin, written Frankland in some of the papers, claimed pay on 2 January 1784 for one hundred days of militia duty in 1782: fifty days at Orangeburg under Capt. William Robertson, twenty days at Four Holes under Lt. Wimpey and thirty days at Four Holes under Lt. Mitchell. He signed with his mark. His memorial counts this service as his. A family account says he fought in the 1781 campaign around Charleston under Col. Thomas Taylor.

By 1802 he was living in Richland District, the district around Columbia. On 4 October 1802 a plat of 843 acres on Crane Creek, a stream that runs into the Broad River above Columbia, was surveyed for Thomas Franklin by Alexander Kennedy.

He died in 1808, without a will. On 18 June 1808 Jemima Franklin and her eldest son Henry applied for letters of administration on the estate of "Thomas Franklin late of the District aforesaid deceased." The ordinary, James S. Guignard, granted them on 2 July 1808, and Jemima, Henry and Robert Duke gave bond as administrators. Robert Duke, John Thornton, James Phillips, Samuel Wadkins and Aaron Wooton appraised the goods. Henry kept the account, which shows articles taken by his mother, and in October 1809 the two of them laid their expenditures before the court. Among the debts paid was one to Christian Lightner, for a note of 1807 and for thirty bushels of corn.

In 1810 Jemima headed a household of thirteen in Richland District. Within a few years the family went west to Louisiana, where Henry's daughter Jemima was born in 1814, and by 1830 most of them were in Rankin County, Mississippi.
