Ailcy Franklin, whose name is also written Ailsa and Elsie, was born in South Carolina in 1806. Her gravestone names her parents as Thomas Barton Franklin and Jemima Morris. Her father, a Richland District planter written plain Thomas Franklin in his own records, died in 1808 when she was two. Her mother took the family west to Louisiana a few years later.
On 10 February 1825 she married Thomas Cryer in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana. He was ten years older and had served in the Louisiana militia in the New Orleans campaign of 1814. Their son Allen Franklin was born in 1825 and their son Wade Richard in 1833 in Calcasieu Parish. By 1850 the family was in Tyler County, Texas, with nine children at home.
Thomas died in Hardin County on 10 August 1855, leaving Ailcy a widow at 49. She lost two grown sons in the Civil War years, Allen Franklin in 1862 and Marselan Terrance in 1863. She applied for a pension as the widow of a soldier of the War of 1812. In 1873 she was living in Grimes County, with her mail at Anderson. By 1879 she had moved to Floresville, in Wilson County, where her son Wade lived, and she was still there in 1887.
Ailcy Cryer died in Texas in 1892, aged about 86. She was buried in the Marcelina Baptist Church Cemetery at Floresville, the same churchyard where her daughter-in-law Mary Jane Scott Cryer had been buried in 1886. A granite stone set later reads "Ailsa Franklin, widow of Thomas Cryer, S. C. 1806, Texas 1892, daughter of Thomas Barton Franklin and Jemima Morris."
