Thomas Bounds Jr. was born in 1801 and is said to have died in 1838, when his daughter Dorothea was about eight. She was born in Maryland about 1830 and turns up in Sangamon County, Illinois, marrying Elias Barker there in July 1848, so the family made the move west either with him at the end of his life or as a widow's household after it.

He is one of several Boundses in that county. The 1850s and 1860s registers there hold a Nathan Bounds born in Maryland about 1830, an Eliza Bound, a Rachel Bounds and a widow entered only as S. Bounds, Maryland-born and about forty-five. Which of them belong to this household is not settled.

A probate index for Licking County, Ohio, lists an estate of a Thomas Bounds among entries of about August 1840, with a Nathan Bounds in the adjoining entries. Licking County lies on the National Road, the main road west from Maryland toward Illinois. The family tree's death year of 1838 is close. Other Boundses lived in Licking County, though, and the index alone cannot show whether the estate is his.
