Thomas Cryer was born in South Carolina in 1796. As a young man he was in Louisiana when the British moved against New Orleans in the winter of 1814. On 23 December 1814 he enlisted as a private in the company of Captain Thomas Bickham, Louisiana militia. He served until 1 February 1815, through the weeks of the campaign that ended with the British defeat below New Orleans on 8 January.

In 1825 he claimed land in St. Helena Parish, and his brother Honor swore an affidavit for the claim. On 10 February 1825 he married Ailcy Franklin, a South Carolina girl born in 1806, in St. Tammany Parish, on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain. Her mother, remarried by then as Jemima Magee, signed her consent. Their eldest son, Allen Franklin Cryer, was born that year. The family moved west across Louisiana, and their son Wade Richard was born in Calcasieu Parish, near the Texas line, on 28 June 1833.

By 1850 they had crossed the Sabine into Texas. The census of that year found Thomas and Ailcy in Tyler County, in the East Texas pine woods, with nine children at home, Wade among them at sixteen. Another son, Marselan Terrance Cryer, was born in 1836.

Thomas lived in Tyler County in 1855. He died on 10 August 1855 in Hardin County, aged about 59, and was buried in the Old Hardin Cemetery near Kountze. Ailcy lived another thirty-seven years. She drew a pension as the widow of a soldier of the War of 1812 and spent her last years at Floresville, in Wilson County, where her son Wade had settled.
