Wade Richard Cryer
Wade Richard Cryer was born on 28 June 1833 in Calcasieu Parish, in the southwest corner of Louisiana. His parents are given as Thomas Cryer and Elsie Franklin. In 1850 the family was living in Tyler County, in the East Texas piney woods, with nine children at home. Wade was 16.
On 26 August 1855 he married Mary Jane Scott, the daughter of James Murph Scott of Newton County, a veteran of the Republic of Texas militia. They moved southwest to Wilson County, south of San Antonio, where their son Arthur Rexes Cryer was born near Floresville in November 1857. Their other children included Thomas Wade, John Harrison, Mary Samantha, who married a Vasbinder, Lafayette Sidney, Alonzo Emanuel and Fannie Jane, who married a Bruce. Several of the sons were still in Wilson County in 1938.
Mary Jane died in Wilson County in January 1886, aged 46, and was buried at the Marcelina Baptist Church near Floresville. In old age Wade went north to the Chickasaw country of Indian Territory, where his son Arthur also moved for a time. He died at Willis, in Marshall County, Oklahoma, on 29 January 1909, aged 75, and was buried in the Willis Cemetery. His stone is marked "W. R. Cryer."
A photograph of him in old age survives: a thin man with a long white beard and a bald crown, in a dark coat and tie.
