Thomas D. Mitchell
Thomas D. Mitchell was born in Ireland about July 1837, the son of Edward Mitchell and Mary Duffy. He came to Waltham, Massachusetts, the mill town on the Charles River, and on 17 May 1868 he married Mary Donahoe there. He gave his age as 34; she was 19 and also Irish-born, the daughter of John Donahue and Margaret Cusick.
Their first child, Mary Elizabeth, was born at Waltham on 7 August 1869. Margaret Loretta followed in 1871, Winifred in 1874, Edward Martin on 11 November 1875, then Ellen, called Nellie, Katherine in 1881, Annie, John Francis, Isabella and Alice Madeline. Thomas worked as a laborer. In 1880 he was working for J. Gilbert and living on John Street at the corner of Friend; in 1890 and 1893 he was at 22 John Street.
His daughter Mary married Patrick Edward Varley, the Moody Street barber, in 1892. The rest of the children mostly stayed at home. In 1910 Thomas and Mary were in Ward 6 of Waltham with Winifred, Katharine, John, Nellie and Alice still in the house. Annie died in 1908. Mary died on 8 March 1914.
Thomas died at Waltham on 23 November 1919, aged about 82; the death certificate says 80. Winifred died the same year. They lie together at Calvary Cemetery, Waltham, under a granite family stone with a cross cut in its top: "1837 THOMAS D. MITCHELL 1919 / 1849 MARY MITCHELL 1914 / 1883 ANNIE C. 1908 / 1874 WINIFRED G. 1919 / 1875 EDWARD M. JUNE 7, 1941 / 1883 MARY E.
