Thomas Daniel Russell
Thomas Daniel Russell was born in Louisiana on 19 June 1874. A memorial compiled by a relative names his parents as John William Russell, a Georgia-born man who lived in Union Parish, Louisiana, before moving north to Union County, Arkansas, and Mary Eugenia Wasson, called Emma. He was one of at least ten children.
On 10 June 1895, in Union Parish, he married Juretta Corley, a Louisiana girl a year younger. They made their home around Huttig, on the Arkansas side of the line. Their children were Allie Eugenia, born in August 1896, Zena Arlena in 1899, LaDell in 1902, Golden Ezra, called Golda, in 1905, Thomas, who lived only from 1907 to 1908, Eathon, called Pickle, in 1909, and Isora Inez in 1913.
Juretta died at their home just northwest of Huttig on Sunday afternoon, 2 January 1916, aged 40, leaving him with children from nineteen down to two. Allie, the eldest, had married Dennis Tucker of Cecil, Louisiana, the winter before. When Thomas died at Huttig on 26 March 1948, aged 73, he was buried beside Juretta in the Harper Springs Cemetery under one stone carved "FATHER" and "MOTHER".
Two photographs of him survive. One is a hand-tinted portrait of Thomas and Juretta together, he in a collarless white shirt and suspenders. The other, taken outdoors in his old age, shows him seated in a chair with five of his grown children standing behind him: Isora, Eathon, Zena, LaDell and Golden.
