Allie Eugenia Russell
Allie Eugenia Russell was born at Huttig, in the south of Union County, Arkansas, on 29 August 1896. Her parents were Thomas Daniel Russell and Juretta Corley, who had married the year before in Union Parish, Louisiana. She was the eldest of their seven children. Her mother died in January 1916, when Eugenia was 19 and the youngest child was two.
On the afternoon of Wednesday 30 December 1914 she married Dennis William Tucker, a Louisiana man then living at Cecil, with the Rev. W. R. M. Dollar officiating. The Huttig News announced it the next week: "Miss Allie Russell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. D. Russell, of this place, and Mr. Dennis Tucker of Cecil, La., were united in marriage on Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 30." A year and three days later her mother died at the family home northwest of Huttig. Eugenia and Dennis raised their family in Union County: Loice William, born in 1919, Alta Marie, born at Strong in 1921, Relda Mae in 1924, and Ray and Dawne. Dennis died in 1948, and in later years she married Bernard Johnston.
Eugenia Russell Johnston died in an El Dorado hospital on the night of Thursday 19 January 1978, after a long illness. She was 81 and lived at 303 Beacon Street. Her obituary in the El Dorado News-Times called her "a life-long resident of Union County" and a Baptist.
Her funeral was at two o'clock on Saturday 21 January 1978 at the Rumph Mortuary chapel, with the Rev. Walter Gilbreath and the Rev. Buster I. Benefield. She was buried in Arlington Cemetery at El Dorado. She left two sons, Loice W. Tucker of El Dorado and Ray Tucker of Waldron; three daughters, Mrs. Dawne Heyn of Redondo Beach, California, Mrs. Relda Langley of Wortham, Texas, and Mrs. Marie Marrable of El Dorado; one brother, Ladell Russell of Huttig; three sisters, Mrs. Zena Nash, Mrs. Robert Martindale and Mrs. Isora Smith, all of Huttig; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Her pallbearers were Thomas Smith, Don Smith, Phillip Smith, L. D. Russell, Huey Russell and Wayne Russell.
Her stone at Arlington Memorial Park carries two hearts, one reading "LOVING MOTHER" and the other "REST IN PEACE", beside "EUGENIA RUSSELL JOHNSTON AUG. 29, 1896 JAN. 19, 1978".
