Thomas Harvey
Thomas Harvey lived at Ashill, a parish in Somerset. His children were baptised in the church there between 1599 and 1615. The parish register, as indexed, calls him "Thomas Harvie" in each entry. Agnes was baptised on 20 January 1599/1600, Thomasine on 12 March 1601/2, Mathew on 12 July 1603, William on 19 August 1610, Marie on 11 June 1613 and James on 5 April 1615.
Thomasine was buried on 12 March 1602, a year after her baptism. The index has Mathew buried on 10 July 1603, two days before his baptism, so one of those two dates has been misread. His wife's name is not in the index. Two women named Agnes Harvie were buried at Ashill, on 13 March 1605 and 21 September 1610. One may be his daughter and the other his wife, but the burial entries name no relationship. No record of his marriage or his burial is known.
He was dead by 20 October 1647. That day Agnes Clarke of Ashill, a widow, made her will. She called his son William "the Sonne of Thomas Harvey deceased my kinsman now in New England". She left William eighteen pounds if he came to claim it within four years, and her household goods for his life. After William, the goods were to go "to the use of James Harvey his Brother". The will was proved in London on 10 May 1648.
William had gone to New England, where he married at Cohannet, later Taunton, in 1639. James stayed at Ashill and had a son William of his own by 1647. A James Harvey and his wife Ann had a son Thomas baptised at Ashill in 1652, very probably the same James.
The Harvey Book of 1899 makes Thomas Harvey of Taunton, born about 1617, a third son. His baptism is not in the Ashill register, and the 1647 will does not name him. The same book traces the family back to a gentry pedigree of Bridgwater. No record supports it.
