Thomas Henry Hubbs
Thomas Henry Hubbs, called Tom, was born on 6 October 1883 at Rockport, in Pike County, Illinois, by his family's record, and every census he appears in gives Illinois. He married Emma M. Brookshier in Canadian County, Oklahoma, about 1909, when she was fifteen; her mother, Jane Brookshier, is named on the marriage record. Their first child, Dessie Mae, was born at Calumet in Canadian County in January 1911.
For twenty-five years the family kept moving. Jessie James was born in Arkansas about 1913 and Daisy Jane there about 1918. The census of January 1920 found them in Forest Township, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, and the children were in school at Granite, in Greer County, in the mid-1920s. In April 1930 Tom, forty-six, and Emma had seven children at home in Cushing, Payne County: Dessie, Jessie, Daisy, Dottie, Roy and the baby Rosetta. They were still in rural Payne County in 1935.
By 1940 they had gone west to Lewis, in Montezuma County, Colorado, where the census found Tom with Emma, Jesse, Roy and Rosetta. His daughter Dessie married Orin Westfall there. Tom and Emma were still at Lewis in 1950. He died in Montezuma County on 8 February 1967, aged eighty-three, and was buried at the Sunnyside Cemetery at Lewis under a granite stone with mountains and pine trees cut on it, which Emma shares.
