Thomas Jones
Thomas Jones was born in November 1855 in Illinois, to a father born in Indiana and a mother born in Illinois. In 1900 the census taker wrote him as James T. Jones. Every later record, his gravestone and his daughter's death certificate call him Thomas.
He came to the Oklahoma Territory in its first years. On 2 December 1891 he married Martha J. Chevalier, called Mattie, a Kansas girl about fifteen years younger, whose mother and brother Albert had also settled in Payne County. Their daughter Pearl Frances was born at Glencoe in Payne County on 13 January 1893. In June 1900 the family was in Pawnee Township, Payne County, Thomas a head of household of 45, married eight years.
By 1905 the family had moved north into Cowley County, Kansas. The Kansas census found him there in 1905 and in Fairview Township in 1915, and the federal census of 1910 has him in Fairview Township with Mattie and Pearl. Pearl married Everett Coleman Coombs there in 1913.
Mattie died on 8 January 1927. Thomas died five months later, on 5 June 1927, at about 71. They are buried together in Akron Cemetery in Fairview Township, under one stone that reads JONES, with MATTIE 1870-1927 and THOMAS 1855-1927.
