Thomas Long

d. 1711
Died 1711
Father: Joseph Long
Mother: Mary Lane
Children include Sarah

Thomas Long was a son of Joseph Long and Mary Lane. His father died, and his mother married again, first Joseph Farnsworth of Dorchester, Massachusetts, who named "her two children by a former husband, viz., Joseph Long and Thomas Long" in his will of January 1659. After Farnsworth died she married John Wilcox, a widower of Hartford and Dorchester who later settled at Middletown, Connecticut.

So Thomas grew up with John Wilcox's daughter Sarah as his step-sister. On 3 October 1666 they married. When his mother made her will by word of mouth in April 1671, she left "Sarah Long," her daughter-in-law, her feather bed and bolster at Hartford and her cloth waistcoat with the great silver lace.

Thomas and Sarah had six children who lived: Mary, who married a Bushnell, Joseph, William, Sarah, Jerusha and Hannah, who married a Moore. Their daughter Sarah, born about 1673, married John Culver of Groton.

The marriage ended in divorce in 1681. Divorce was rare, but Connecticut's courts could grant a full divorce, which English law of the time did not allow. Sarah married David Ensign of Hartford. Thomas married Sarah Elmer and had five more children with her. He died at Windsor, Connecticut, on 8 November 1711.
