Thomas Shed, called Old Thomas Shed in the Finchingfield register, the first of this family to settle in that parish and the man from whom every Shed there in the seventeenth century descended.

He was buried at Finchingfield on 9 September 1637, three and a half weeks after making his will. That will is the main record of him and it survives word for word. It calls him Thomas Sheade of Fynchingfield in the Countie of Essex, Husbandman, beinge of good & perfect remembrance. It leaves twenty shillings to Kathren my wyff, to be paid within a year. It leaves twelvepence apiece to Thomas Shede my sonne and to Suzan my Daughter and Elizabeth my Daughter. And then it gives all the rest of my goods and chattels and moveables, goods within howsse and without howsse whatsoever, to Danyell Sheed my sonne, whom he also appointed sole executor, prayinge and desieringe hime to Deale truly as I hoope he will.

There is one other bequest and it is the one that lasts. To Suzan Kent my grayndchilde, the Beed and beddinge she lye on, and a whele and rele: the bed the child was actually sleeping in, and a spinning wheel and a reel to wind the yarn on. He could not write his own name. The will is signed with a mark.
