Thomasine Scotto

Children include Thomas

Thomasine Scotto lived at Great Yarmouth, in Norfolk, as the wife of Thomas Scottow. The parish register of St Nicholas there records the baptisms of their children, the clerk writing her name as Tomi, Tomasin, Tomasen and Tomisen: Thomas in April 1615, Joshua in June 1617, Mary in August 1619, Sara in October 1621 and John in May 1624. A daughter Rebecca followed about 1626. A modern study of her origins calls her Thomasine Killett.

Her husband died before 1634. That year she came to Boston as a widow with Thomas, Joshua and Rebecca. She was admitted to the First Church of Boston on 21 September 1634, entered as "Thomasyn Scottoe widow." Her sons joined on 19 May 1639, "the sonnes of our sister Thomasine Scottowe."

She married again, to a man named Sanford. In May 1660 her son Thomas left "vnto my aged mother, Sanford" ten pounds, "to be payd vnto her as her necessitie may call for it." Her second husband was probably Richard Sanford of Boston, whose first wife Margery died in 1640. Thomas Scotto named two daughters Thomasine after her, in 1659 and 1660. Her son Joshua became one of the leading men of Boston, a founder of the South Church and Chief Justice of the Common Pleas for Maine.
