Thore Oline Ellefsdatter
Thore Oline Ellefsdatter was baptized in Holt church on 8 October 1797, a daughter of Ellef Olsen and Ane Gurine Olsdatter of Joranstad, a farm in Holt parish behind Tvedestrand. The clerk wrote her name as Tore Hellene, that is, Tore Helene. Every later record calls her Tore Oline or Toroline. The farm, her father's name and her age all agree that the child is her. Her mother was churched, given thanks in church for a safe birth, two weeks later.
Her father had come to Holt from Gjerpen parish in Telemark and married her mother at Holt in 1789. In 1816 he held the largest share of Joranstad. Her mother died there in August 1826, aged fifty-six.
On 16 September 1822 she married the skipper Ole Aslaksen in Holt church. Both of them were living at Joranstad. The clerks wrote her patronymic five different ways over the next eight years, but two of them say Ellef outright, and the couple named their second son Ellef in 1824. Their children were Anne Bergitte in 1823, Ellef in 1824, Andreas in 1826, Ingeborg Oline in 1830 and Jens in 1835, and a daughter who married a Christoffersen.
Ole died before 1865. By then she had left the farm for the town. The 1865 census finds her at sixty-nine as Husmoder, head of house 41 in Tvedestrand, with her unmarried son Jens, three Christoffersen granddaughters and a servant girl. In 1870 she was still the head of the house, at Hoved Gade 41, and she had a trade of her own. The census calls her Thor Oline Aslaksen, seventy-three, brendevinshandel, a dealer in spirits. Jens had married by then and lived with her, with his wife Dina, their baby Olav, two of her granddaughters, Dina's brother and two servants.
She died on 24 November 1875 and was buried at Holt on the 29th.
