Thurston Clarke

Thurston Clarke was of Ipswich in Suffolk. He was forty-four years old when he brought his family to Plymouth in 1634 in the ship Francis, which puts his birth about 1590. His name is written Tristram Clarke in some records. He came with his wife Faith, his daughter Faith, and two sons, Thurston junior and Henry. His parish at Ipswich and his own parents are not known.

At Plymouth he lived on the High Cliff, the same slope where Edward Doty, the Mayflower passenger, held his house and land. His daughter married the man on the neighbouring lot, and through her he has a very large American posterity. In 1649 he sold his house there to John Dunham, who is described as living next to Edward Doty. He died at Duxbury in 1661, and his wife Faith outlived him.

His two sons probably had no children. The last the records have of them is an order of 1 April 1690, when the selectmen of Duxborough reported that Henry Clarke and Thurston Clarke, by reason of their age, indiscretion and weakness of understanding, were incapable of their own support notwithstanding that they had an estate sufficient. John Dotey of Plymouth, their nephew, having promised to take prudent care of them, was allowed to recoup himself from their estate. He was one of the sons of their sister Faith.
