Tom Ellsworth Jackson was born on 28 July 1889 in Arkansas. His gravestone at Henryetta reads "Tom E. Jackson, July 28, 1889, Nov. 5, 1952."

He came to Okmulgee County, Oklahoma, and settled around Henryetta and the neighbouring town of Dewar. Henryetta sits on coal, and its smelters, where zinc ore was roasted and refined, were among the main employers of the district. Tom worked as a smelter worker.

His wife was Myrta Bratcher, born on 16 June 1896. Her maiden name is given in the obituary of their daughter Ruby, and Tom's own obituary calls her Myrtle. They had seven children who lived to be grown: John Freeman Jackson, born in 1916; Sadie; Ruby, born at Henryetta on 24 September 1923; Virgil, born in 1925; Earl; Alvana; and Virginia. Tom's grave memorial dates the marriage to 1919, three years after John's birth, so either that year is wrong or John was born before the marriage was recorded.

By 1952 most of the children had left Oklahoma. Tom's obituary found them across the West: Sadie, Mrs. Martindale, at Hayward, California; Ruby, Mrs. Harry Richardson, at Pittsburg, California; Alvana, Mrs. Crafton E. Stone, at Hanford, California; Virginia, Mrs. Dick Farris, at Houston, Texas; John at Alhambra, California; and Earl at Sacramento. Only Virgil was still at Henryetta.

Tom's own brothers and sisters had stayed closer to home. In 1952 his sister, Mrs. Oney Jobe, lived at Henryetta, and another sister, Mrs. Jim Jemmison, at Bakersfield, California. His brother Clyde was at Henryetta, and his brothers Leonard and Bill at Checotah, in the next county east.

Tom Jackson died on Wednesday morning, 5 November 1952, at his home in Dewar, at sixty-three. The Henryetta Daily Free-Lance ran the news on its front page the next day, under the headline "Services Pending For Tom Jackson." He left his wife, his seven children, thirteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is buried in Salt Creek Cemetery at Henryetta. Myrta outlived him by sixteen years and was buried there in 1969.
