Torbiørn Torkildsen
Farmer at Lund in Skiptvet, born about 1728 and so seventy-three when the census was taken in February 1801. He heads the second of the households on the farm, entered Huusbonde and Bonde og gaardbeboer, with his wife Kari Syvertsdatter, fifty-nine, and two servants, an eighteen-year-old Anders Aslaksen and a seventeen-year-old Marie Hansdatter. In the first household on the same farm is Iver Torbiørnsen, twenty-five, whose patronymic says whose son he is.
That arrangement, the young man working the ground and the old man still called a farmer in the house next door, is how a Norwegian holding changed hands without changing owner. The name of his own father survives in his patronymic and nowhere else: a Torkild, who would have been born somewhere around 1700.
He was buried at Skiptvet on 12 August 1810, his age entered to the day, which puts his birth about March 1728. The Skiptvet registers before 1794, which would hold his baptism, are not transcribed.
