Uriah Patrick
Uriah Patrick was born in Pennsylvania about 1794, by his age in the 1850 census. His parents are not named in any record found. The records that come closest place him in Fayette County, in the southwest corner of the state, among a family of Patricks at Uniontown.
On 28 May 1816 James Fletcher and his wife Elizabeth sold him a lot in Uniontown, the Fayette County seat. That August he witnessed a large sale by a James Patrick. On 7 August 1816 James Patrick and his wife Patience sold "Crooked Path," a 208-acre tract in Union Township, to Joseph Huston for $7,401.37 1/2. The tract had been patented to John Patrick in 1786, and John's will of 1782 had left it "to his Son James Patrick." In 1818 Uriah bought parts of Crooked Path and of a neighboring tract called Contentment back from Huston for $2,701.80. He then sold them to Levi Springer Sr. That same year he sold his Uniontown lot to John Miller "of the Borough of Union."
Patience Patrick was born a Murphy. In 1801 the Fayette County Orphans' Court divided the land of Robert Murphy of Franklin Township, who had died without a will. The land went to the eldest son, John Murphy, who was to pay the widow, Jane, $10.98 a year and pay shares to the other heirs. Among them was "James Patrick in right of Patience his wife." Two years later James and Patience sold Franklin Township land to Jacob Bowman.
Uriah was very probably a son of James and Patience, and so a grandson of John Patrick and of Robert and Jane Murphy. He witnessed their deed and bought part of their land back, and he left the county the same year he did it. No record says so outright. A James Patrick Jr. of Uniontown died by December 1818, when John Patrick, his administrator, settled an estate of $123.02. James Jr. and John may have been Uriah's brothers.
His wife was Delilah McCracken, born about 1803 at Brownsville, on the Monongahela in Fayette County. Their son William was born about 1823. By 1825 they had moved west to Mount Vernon, in Knox County, Ohio, where their daughter Sarah was born that March.
In Knox County he took apprentices and bought land. In 1828 he took Jesse B. Smith, aged seventeen, as an apprentice. In 1832 he bought at the estate sale of Dr. G. B. Maxfield of Mount Vernon. Before 1838 he bought 75 acres on the west side of Lot 5 in Pleasant Township. The 1840 and 1850 censuses find him in Pleasant Township. In 1850 the household held Uriah, 56; Delilah, 46; and the children William, Hannah J., John, Robert F., Josiah C., David L. and Mary J.
He died before 6 December 1853, when his estate was appraised. His son William and his son-in-law Thomas Colville were the administrators. He "died seized in fee simple of the West half of Lot No five (5) and of Lot No Six (6)." In 1857 the administrators petitioned to sell land against "Delila Patrick Widow" and the heirs. The heirs were William, John, Robert F., Josiah C., Mary D., David L. and Delilah Patrick, "Sarah Colville & her husband," and "Hannah J. Colville & her husband R. M. Colville." The widow's dower was set at $14 a year. Ten acres went to Robert Miller for $367 on 29 April 1857.
