Victoria Josephine Westgate
Victoria Josephine Westgate was born on 19 April at Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. Her death certificate gives the year as 1847, her memorial as 1849, and her gravestone as 1846. Her father was Ephraim Westgate, born at Fairhaven, and her mother was Sophia A. Baker, born at Wareham.
On 15 December 1863 she married Edmond William Stringer at Carver. He had been born at Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. If the certificate's year is right, she was sixteen. Their first child, Ephraim Edmond, was born the next year and was named for her father.
She bore fifteen children between 1864 and 1892. Two daughters named Sophia, after her mother, came in 1871 and 1873; the first died at two. Her daughter Victoria Josephine, born in 1876, took her own name. Two small sons, John Clement and Henry, died in 1889, and her last child, Jessie, was born and died in 1892.
The family lived on Elm Street in East Wareham. Victoria died there on 10 November 1916, aged sixty-nine years, six months and twenty-one days. The doctor, C. S. Gleason of Wareham, gave the cause as valvular disease of the heart. She was buried at Agawam Cemetery in East Wareham on 12 November 1916, by the undertakers George E. Cornwall and Sons of Wareham. Her name is cut on the Stringer family stone there as "VICTORIA J. 1846-1916".
