Victoria Josephine Stringer
Victoria Josephine Stringer was born in 1876 at Carver, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, the cranberry town just north of Wareham. She was the seventh of fifteen children of Edmond William Stringer, who had been born at Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island, and Victoria Josephine Westgate of Middleborough, and she carried her mother's names. She went by Josephine.
On 3 December 1892 she married Jesse E. Snell at Wareham. Both gave their age as eighteen; by her gravestone she was sixteen. The clerk entered her parents as Edmund Stringer and Victoria Westgate.
The couple lived at East Wareham. Their children were Ella Josephine, born 1893, Esther Louisa, 1894, Grace Frances, about 1896, Elmer William, 1901, and Bernice Maria, 1903. Her eldest daughter carried her middle name. When Grace married in 1914, the Wareham clerk wrote her mother as V. Josephine Stringer.
In November 1916 her mother died on Elm Street, East Wareham. Josephine died at East Wareham on 19 January 1928, at about fifty-two, only five days after her father. She was buried at Agawam Cemetery in Wareham, in Section A, Lot 306, Grave 2. Her red granite stone, carved with a scrolled S, reads "MOTHER / V. JOSEPHINE SNELL / 1876 1928 / THE ANGELS CALLED HER". Jesse was later buried beside her.
