1916-2001 · Texas
Born 1916, Medina County, Texas
Died 2001
Father: Zacarias Moncada
Mother: Cruz Saures

Victoriano Moncada was born on 10 March 1916 in Medina County, Texas, in the ranch and farm country west of San Antonio. He went by Victor for most of his life. His father, Zacarias Moncada, had come up from Mexico about 1905. His mother, Cruz Saures, was born at Laredo, Texas, in 1893.

In 1920 he was four, living with his parents in Medina County. In 1930 he was thirteen and still at home there, in Precinct 7 of the county.

By 1939 he had married Clara Salazar, a girl from the same corner of the county. She was born at Yancey in 1921. In April 1940 the young couple had their own house at Yancey. Victor was 24 and Clara was 18, and they had a baby son, Esau, the boy later called Isaac. Five years earlier, in 1935, Victor had been living in the same house.

Their children came quickly. Helena was born in Medina County on 1 June 1940. Oralia, Robert and Pedro followed, all Texas born. Robert was born at Hondo, the county seat, on 13 February 1944.

After the war the family went north. Robert later remembered that as a young boy he and his family worked in the fields throughout Michigan and Ohio. The children's birthplaces trace the route. Jesus, called Jessie, was born in Michigan about 1948. Carlos, called Carl, was born in Ohio in late 1949.

By April 1950 they had settled in Saginaw, Michigan. Victor was 33 and worked forty hours a week as a chipper in a foundry, cleaning the rough edges off fresh castings. Clara kept house. They rented a basement flat at number 626, with another Texas family, Lorenzo and Sally Reyes and their children, living upstairs. Eight children were at home.

Victor and Clara stayed in Saginaw for the rest of their lives. More children were born there, among them Benjamin in 1954, Enrique and Alicia. Clara died on 15 October 1997. Victor died in Saginaw on 8 September 2001, aged 85. Both are buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Saginaw.

His mother died at Yancey in 1961 and his father there in 1971. Victor was named as the only son in his father's obituary.
