Zacarias Moncada
Zacarias Moncada was born in Mexico on 6 November 1885. His parents were Cecilio Moncada and Lucia Valles. He came to the United States about 1905, when he was about twenty, and made his life as a farmer in Medina County, Texas, in the brush and farm country west of San Antonio.
His wife was Cruz Saures, born at Laredo, on the Texas side of the Rio Grande, in 1893. By 1916 they were in Medina County, where their son Victoriano was born that March. In 1920 the census taker wrote the family name as Muncada and his given name as Zachario. He was 35, Cruz was 23, and Victoriano was 4. In 1930 the family was in Precinct 7 of the county, around the small town of Yancey. Zacarias, written Sacarias, was 45.
Cruz died at home in Yancey on 7 September 1961. Zacarias was the informant on her death certificate. He lived another ten years there. His son Victor had gone north to Saginaw, Michigan, after the war, but his brother Gregorio stayed at Yancey.
Zacarias Moncada died at Yancey on 4 March 1971, aged 85, of pneumonitis brought on by uremia, after two weeks under a Hondo doctor's care. The rosary was said for him at the Guinn-Horger Chapel in Hondo on the evening of 4 March. His funeral was held the next day at the Yancey Catholic church, with the Rev. Emmett Carolan officiating, and he was buried in the Yancey Catholic Cemetery, where Cruz lies. His obituary named his son Victoriano of Saginaw, his brother Gregorio of Yancey, his sister Simona Sarabia of Rochester, Texas, ten grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren.
