Virginia Laura Evans
Virginia Laura Evans was born in Philadelphia on 1 July 1925. She was the only child of Thomas Reynolds Evans, a Philadelphia electrotyper and clerk, and Marion Elizabeth Haas. Her parents had married in October 1924.
She was three months old when her father died. Thomas Evans died at the Lankenau Hospital on 9 October 1925, two days after his forty-third birthday. Her mother was twenty-two.
Marion married again, to Frederich Haussmann, and Virginia grew up in his house. In 1940 the household lived in Philadelphia's 35th Ward, in the northeast of the city, and had been in the same house in 1935. Virginia, fifteen, was listed as Frederich's stepdaughter. Her grandmother Amelia F. Haas, 67, and an aunt, Elizabeth Haas, 31, lived with them.
In November 1941, at sixteen, she applied for a Social Security number. She was living at Haddonfield, New Jersey, and named her parents as Thomas R. Evans and Marion E. Haas.
She married Charles Howard Laird, a Camden man, in Philadelphia on 19 November 1946. She was twenty-one and he was twenty-five. A family account places the wedding in the Lawndale section of the city. The marriage record names her parents as Thomas Evans and Marion Haas, and his as Charles Laird and Veronica Coleman.
By May 1950 they lived in Haddon Township, Camden County, where Charles worked as a railroad fireman. Their daughter Sheryl was two. Four children were born in all: Charles E., Sheryl, Denise and Barbara.
Virginia died at Haddon Township on 3 July 1988, two days after her sixty-third birthday. Her obituary, published on 6 July, named her husband Charles H., her son Charles E., her daughters Sheryl, Denise and Barbara, under their married names Landgraf, Hudson and Davis, and her mother, Marion E. Haussman, who was still living. She was buried in Locustwood Memorial Park at Cherry Hill.
