Marion Elizabeth Haas

Marion Elizabeth Haas was born on 25 January 1903 in Philadelphia. Her parents were Samuel James Haas and Amelia Fredrica Truede, and she was the sixth of their eleven children, born between 1891 and 1914. In 1910, at seven, she lived with them and seven brothers and sisters in Cheltenham Township, just outside the city. In 1920, at seventeen, she was with the family in Philadelphia.

In October 1924, at twenty-one, she married Thomas Reynolds Evans, a Philadelphia electrotyper twenty years older than she was. Their daughter, Virginia Laura Evans, was born on 1 July 1925. Three months later, on 9 October 1925, Thomas died at the Lankenau Hospital. Marion was twenty-two, with a baby, and a widow a year after her wedding.

She married again, to Frederich Haussmann, a Pennsylvania man about fourteen years older than she was. In 1940 they lived in Philadelphia's 35th Ward, in the northeast of the city, in the same house they had lived in during 1935. Frederich was 51 and Marion 37. Virginia, 15, was in the household as his stepdaughter. Her mother, Amelia F. Haas, 67, and her sister Elizabeth, 31, lived with them.

Virginia married Charles Howard Laird in Philadelphia in November 1946. The marriage record names her mother by her maiden name, Marion Haas.

Marion outlived her only daughter. When Virginia died in July 1988, her obituary named her mother, Marion E. Haussman, among the survivors. Marion died on 8 September 1997 at Tabernacle, in the Pine Barrens of Burlington County, New Jersey, at ninety-four. She was buried in Lawnview Cemetery, where her first husband had been buried seventy-two years before.
