Walter Suchocki
Walter Suchocki was born in Brooklyn on 29 July 1908, the eldest son of Louis Suchocki, a laborer from Poland, and Dora Socha, a New York-born daughter of Polish parents. He grew up in East New York, where the family lived in a tenement at 182 Sheffield Avenue in 1911, and he was one of eight children: Stanley, Martha, Frances, Anthony, Helen, Adam and Joseph followed him.
His father died at Kings County Hospital in May 1927, when Walter was eighteen. In April 1930 he was still at home, twenty-one and single, in his widowed mother's house in Brooklyn with six brothers and sisters.
In September 1936, living at 147 New Jersey Avenue in East New York, he took out a marriage license with Philomena Copertino of 138 New Jersey Avenue, across the street. She was the daughter of Alessandro Copertino, from Contrada in the province of Avellino, and the late Rose Rocca. Their daughter Rosemarie was born on 28 July 1937, and in April 1940 the three of them were living in the first assembly district of Queens. When he registered for the draft in Queens after 16 October 1940 he gave his employer as the Metal Etching Corp. and named Minnie Suchocki, his wife by her everyday name, as the person who would always know where he was. The card describes him: five feet eleven, 185 pounds, blue eyes, brown hair, a ruddy complexion.
A son Thomas came in about 1943 and Robert in 1946. On 1 April 1950 the five of them were at house number 9416 in Queens Village, Walter 42 and head of the house. He died in February 1973, aged 65, his last residence in Nassau County, in the Uniondale postal district. His burial place has not been found.
