Wesley Broadwell Lyles
Wesley Broadwell Lyles was born on 11 April 1879, the youngest named child of Thomas Alexander Lyles and his second wife, Julia Ann Elizabeth Cocknell. His father was a South Carolinian who had come to Jackson Parish, Louisiana, from Greene County, Alabama, in 1857. Wesley grew up with eight full brothers and sisters, among them William Gordon Lyles, who also married a Hinton, and Orville Braxton Lyles, who never married. In June 1880 the census taker found him as "Wesly," 2, the youngest of nine children at home in his father's farmhouse in Ward One of Lincoln Parish. He made his own life in the Wesley Chapel community southwest of Ruston. He married Julia Hinton, a daughter of Benjamin Franklin Hinton and Sarah Elizabeth Wright of the same community. When Julia's mother died in 1934, the Ruston Daily Leader listed "Mrs. Weslie Lyles of the Wesley Chapel community" among her daughters.
For a time the young family farmed in Texas. In October 1910 they were at Cameron, in Milam County, where their third child, Ruth, was born; her birth certificate names her father as W. B. Lyles, a farmer born in Louisiana. By 1934 they were back in the Wesley Chapel community. Their children were Paul Harris Lyles, Lesley Wesley Lyles, Ruth and Maurine Elizabeth, later Haughton. Ruth married Bradford Allen Cryer and moved to Texas.
Wesley Lyles died on 16 March 1965, aged 85, and is buried in the old burying ground at Wesley Chapel. Julia died the next year and lies near him.
