Whitman P. Conklin
Whitman P. Conklin was born in New York in 1821, by his gravestone. He spent his life in the town of Smithtown, Suffolk County, on the north shore of Long Island. Later censuses gave it as anything from 1815 to 1825. His parents are not known for certain. He may have been a son of Jesse Conklin of Smithtown, who died on 1 April 1821, and his wife Charity Darling. If so, he was born in the year his father died.
He married Mary Elizabeth Brown of Commack, the daughter of Stephen Brown and Jemima Blatchley. In 1843 they were living in the town of Huntington, where Whitman bought a village lot for $200 and in August sold one to David Platt for $280. Their son Warren William was born at Commack on 15 June 1852.
In 1860 the census taker in the town of Smithtown wrote him as Whitson Conklin, 39. His household held Mary, 35, and the children George, 14, Albert, 13, Warren, 8, and Martha, 5. In the state census of 1865 the family was Whitman, Mary E., Elbert S., Warren W. and Martha. In 1870 Whitman, 45, and Mary, 45, were still in Smithtown with Warren, 18, Martha E., 14, and a little Charles H., 3.
By 1900 Whitman was living in Brookhaven, the next town east, in a household with Charles W. Conklin and his family. He died on 15 February 1901, about 80 years old. He is buried in Landing Cemetery, the old burying ground beside the Methodist church at Smithtown Landing. The dark granite stone has CONKLIN cut across the top and reads WHITMAN P. CONKLIN, 1821 - 1901, and below a rule, MARY E. BROWN, HIS WIFE, 1824 - 1912. His son Warren and Warren's wife Ida lie in the same cemetery.
