William Benton Hopkins was born on 24 January 1883 at Stockton, the seat of Cedar County in south-west Missouri. He spent his working life as a farmer in south-east Kansas.
He was a son of Thomas Benton Hopkins, a Cedar County farmer and Union cavalry veteran, and carried his father's middle name. His mother was probably Nancy, his father's second wife, who died in 1892. In 1900 William, 17, was at home on his father's farm in Washington Township, Cedar County, with his brother Albert. His father died in 1906. By 1910 William had crossed into Kansas and was living in Crawford Township, Crawford County.
On 11 January 1911 he married Ida D., a Kentucky girl two years younger, born at Ramsey. The date is cut on their shared stone. Their daughter Gladys was born on 27 December 1911, by a family record at Farlington in Crawford County, a farming village in the south-east corner of the state. Gladys was their only child to survive them.
The Hopkinses farmed for many years around Savonburg, a small town in Allen County. Gladys married Dwight Leander Aimes, and in 1940 she and Dwight were living at Farlington with their children. Later the Aimes family settled at Mulvane, south of Wichita, and in about 1967 William and Ida, both in their eighties, left Savonburg and moved to Mulvane to be near her.
William died at Mulvane on Thursday 2 October 1969, aged 86. The Wichita paper's notice called him a Mulvane retired farmer, born at Stockton, Missouri, and named as survivors his widow, Ida, and a daughter, Mrs. Gladys Aimes of Mulvane. The service was at 2:30 on the Sunday afternoon at the Senter Mulvane Mortuary. Ida died less than three months later. They are buried together in Mulvane Cemetery under one red granite stone: HOPKINS, Married Jan. 11, 1911, Mom Ida D. 1885-1969, Dad William B. 1883-1969.
