Gladys M. Hopkins
Gladys M. Hopkins was born on 27 December 1911, the only daughter of William Benton Hopkins, a farmer from Stockton, Missouri, and his wife Ida, who came from Ramsey, Kentucky. Her parents had married on 11 January 1911. A family record gives her birthplace as Farlington, in Crawford County in the south-east corner of Kansas, and her full name as Gladys Mae.
She married Dwight L. Aimes, by the same family record on 24 December 1932, and they raised four children: Bob, Dean, Donna and Joyce. In 1940 they were at Farlington, in Sherman Township, with Robert, Donna and Dean. Her parents farmed for many years around Savonburg in Allen County. The family later settled at Mulvane, Sumner County, south of Wichita, and Gladys waited tables at the D & L Cafe for her working life. In about 1967 her parents, by then in their eighties, came to Mulvane to be near her. Her father died there on 2 October 1969 and her mother on 23 December, and both notices named her, as Mrs. Gladys Aimes and Mrs. Gladys Ames, as their surviving daughter.
Dwight died in 1971, her son Dean in 2004, her daughter Joyce in 1999. She died on Saturday 26 January 2002, aged 90. The Wichita Eagle notice three days later read: "Gladys Aimes, 90, retired D & L Cafe waitress, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002. Service 2 p.m. Wednesday, Senter-Smith Mortuary. Survivors: two sons; daughter; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. Memorial established with Mulvane United Methodist Church." She is buried with Dwight at Mulvane Cemetery, near her parents.
