William Booth was born in 1794 in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. He married Jane E. Wharton, a daughter of John Wharton of Wayne Township in neighboring Mifflin County. Their children were John, born 1826; Rebecca, 1827; William Harrison, 1831; Elizabeth, 1833; Jane Anne, 1837; Robert, born on 29 November 1841; Eleanor, 1844; and Diannah, 1846.

In 1848 the family lived in Cromwell Township. Jane died there on 30 May 1848, aged about 39, and was buried in the Jordan Cemetery. The same year took their daughter Elizabeth at fourteen or fifteen, and in October Jane's father, John Wharton, died on his farm in Mifflin County. William was left with seven children, the youngest two years old.

William later bought a farm in Springfield Township, between Maddensville and Dublin Mills, and the family buried its dead on the farm.

His son Robert went into the Union Army on 9 September 1863, in Company E of the 143rd Pennsylvania Volunteers, an infantry regiment. Two months later, on 13 November 1863, he died at Alexandria, Virginia, aged 21. He was buried in the soldiers' cemetery there. On 26 November his body was taken up again, and on 29 November it was buried at home, on the Booth farm. Every one of those dates is cut into his stone.

His daughter Rebecca married Jacob Hamman, a Cromwell Township farmer, as his second wife, and had nine children.

William died on 25 March 1879, aged about 85. He is buried in the Booth Cemetery on his farm. No stone for him has been found there.
