William Cox was a Quaker miller of Deep River, in what is now Randolph County, North Carolina. His mill named the neighbourhood: Cox's Mill. He lived from about 1692 to 1767.

He was a son of William Cox, yeoman of New Castle County, Delaware, and his wife Amy. On 19 February 1734/5 his father and mother sold "William Cox, farmer of O. Casson," land on Christiana Creek, signing the deed by mark. O. Casson was Occasion, the tract at Hockessin in Mill Creek Hundred he had settled in 1726. His father died insolvent in 1742/3. His brothers were John, Richard and Thomas, and his sister Amy married John Allen in 1719.

He married Katharine about 1716 under Newark Monthly Meeting, in the Delaware and Pennsylvania country. Their son John was born in New Castle County in 1728. The family came south to the Cane Creek country in the 1750s.

His daughter Mary married James Lindley in 1754, and Cane Creek Meeting disowned her for marrying out. The state biography names her plainly as "daughter of William Cox of Cox's Mill." In 1767 William and three of his sons were disowned in turn, for attending the wedding of Herman Husband.

He made his will on 20 January 1767. It left his land on Deep River to his sons Harmon, John, Solomon and Thomas. Five daughters had money legacies, and his son William and a kinsman, Isaac Cox, were named executors. The will is known from a transcription printed in 1955.

One memorial gives his dates as 11 December 1692 to 20 January 1767, the death falling on the same day as the will, and places his burial at Mill Creek Friends Cemetery near Asheboro. A marker there calls the old burying ground the graveyard of the Quakers of Cox's Settlement, "on the land of William Cox, pioneer." If he died that January, the disownment of 1767 for attending Herman Husband's wedding may belong to his son William rather than to him.
