William Cox was a yeoman, later called a laborer, of New Castle County, Delaware. He is on record there from 25 May 1719. A yeoman was a farmer who held his own land.

He bought land in Letitia Penn's manor on the Brandywine in 1721 and 1725. William Penn had granted that tract to his daughter Letitia, and it lay partly in New Castle County and partly in Chester County, Pennsylvania. On 16 November 1725 Henry Dickeson and his wife Ruth sold him part of it.

In 1729 and 1732 he bought a lot on Beaver Street in the town of New Castle from Robert Reynolds and William Kellum and Mary his wife. In December 1734 John and Thomas Embly sold him land on the north side of Christiana Creek. His wife was Amy, written Amey in one deed. In January and February 1734/5 the two of them sold the Beaver Street lot and the Christiana Creek land. Neither could write, and both signed by mark.

He died in 1742/3 owing more than he owned. His son John administered the estate and in 1743 sold land to William Patterson to settle it.

A Cox family history printed in 1955 gives his children as John, Richard, William, Thomas and Amy. The William of that list is William Cox of Cox's Mill, born about 1692, who settled the tract called Occasion at Hockessin in 1726. The younger William's will of 1767 names as executor "my trusty & well beloved Son & Cousin, William Cox & Isaac Cox." Isaac was a son of Thomas, so a nephew, in the old sense of cousin. One of that will's witnesses was John Allen, who had married the daughter Amy in 1719.
