William Daugherty
William Daugherty was born at Englewood, in McMinn County, Tennessee, on 17 November 1931, ten months after his parents, William Taft Daugherty and Maude Marie Jeralds, were married there. By 1940 the family had moved to Los Angeles County, California. In his records he is Bill Ronald Daugherty, or Billy Ronald Daugherty.
By 1950 he was living at 1748 West 168th Street in Gardena, Los Angeles County, California. On 27 October 1950 he and Zelma Louise Manugoff, of 1242 West Compton Boulevard in Gardena, took out a marriage licence. Both were eighteen and neither had been married before. They were married on 3 November 1950 at the Chapel of Friendship in Gardena by a Methodist minister, with Marvin D. Williams of Hawthorne as witness. Bill signed the certificate in a large, sweeping hand as Bill Ronald Daugherty. The Gardena Valley News reported that both had graduated from Gardena High School that year, that Bill was in the artillery of the National Guard, and that he worked at Columbia Steel. Marvin Williams was his best man, and the couple honeymooned at Riverside and settled in Torrance.
Their first son, William Steven Daugherty, was born at Gardena on 28 August 1951. A daughter, Michael, was born in Los Angeles County on 9 January 1956, and there was also a son, Dennis Dean.
His father died in August 1954, found beside the Texas and Pacific Railway near Lodi, Texas, killed falling or thrown from a moving train, and was buried at Englewood.
By 1956 Bill and Zelma had settled at 22409 Susana Avenue in Torrance. That year the city directory listed him as working for Northrop, the aircraft maker at Hawthorne. By 1959 he was a clerk for the Redondo Beach city schools, and the family was still on Susana Avenue.
Bill died in San Diego County on 5 October 1982, at fifty.
